"It would be more the turn of a French-speaking person, and we have some good ones"
The Swiss Defense Ministry has initiated a comprehensive search for a new army chief to replace the outgoing Thomas Süssli. Defense Minister Martin Pfister has established a dedicated selection committee tasked with reviewing the credentials of 50 high-ranking military officers. This transition comes at a crucial time for the Swiss military, following Süssli's announcement to step down at the end of the year. The current chief, who came from a banking and IT background, reportedly faced challenges in securing complete support from his colleagues during his tenure since 2019.
The selection process focuses primarily on professional military officers, specifically targeting corps commanders, divisional commanders, and brigadiers. Key requirements for the position include strong leadership capabilities and excellent communication skills. The committee is particularly emphasizing the need for linguistic diversity, with a strong preference for candidates who can speak French, addressing a notable gap in the current leadership. The future army chief must also demonstrate the ability to effectively manage the military's public image and justify its expanded budget allocation.
Among the 50 candidates under consideration, several prominent figures have emerged as frontrunners. From French-speaking Switzerland, Corps Commander Laurent Michaud from Vaud has been identified as a leading candidate, particularly noted for his operational experience. Other notable French-speaking candidates include Divisional Commander Alain Vuitel from Neuchâtel and Divisional Commander Raynald Droz from Fribourg. From the German-speaking region, Divisional Commanders Benedikt Roos and Rolf André Siegenthaler are also considered strong contenders. Notably, the candidate pool includes one female officer, marking a potential for historic change in the Swiss military leadership.
While the Defense Ministry has not established a rigid timeline for the selection process, they have emphasized their commitment to proceeding efficiently. The transition is expected to be completed before the end of the year, coinciding with Thomas Süssli's departure. The selection committee will conduct thorough evaluations of all candidates, considering their operational experience, leadership capabilities, and ability to represent Switzerland's military interests both domestically and internationally. The process reflects Switzerland's commitment to maintaining a strong and effective military leadership while adapting to modern defense challenges.
