Swiss Solidarity raises record CHF34 million for humanitarian causes

Swiss Solidarity, the humanitarian arm of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC), has achieved a remarkable milestone by raising CHF34.4 million ($37.7 million) in donations during 2024. This substantial amount demonstrates the continued generosity of Swiss citizens and their commitment to humanitarian causes. The organization's operational efficiency is evident in its ability to deploy CHF63 million towards various humanitarian projects throughout the year, showcasing its role as a crucial player in Switzerland's humanitarian landscape.

Half of Swiss Solidarity's humanitarian spending in 2024 was directed towards Ukraine, with nearly CHF30 million allocated to 44 distinct projects. These initiatives focused on critical areas including housing rehabilitation, medical care provision, and child protection services. The organization's substantial commitment to Ukraine reflects Switzerland's broader humanitarian tradition and its response to one of Europe's most pressing humanitarian crises.

Swiss Solidarity demonstrated its versatility in responding to both domestic and international crises in 2024. Domestically, CHF13 million was raised to address devastating summer storms in Switzerland. Internationally, the organization provided CHF11.5 million for 27 projects in earthquake-affected Turkey and Syria, while also allocating CHF5.9 million for civilian aid in the Middle East and CHF2.7 million for the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Additionally, CHF5 million was dedicated to supporting child victims of violence and abuse both within Switzerland and abroad.

The significant fundraising success of 2024 positions Swiss Solidarity as a continuing force in humanitarian aid. While the previous year saw CHF54 million in donations and CHF70 million in spending, the organization's ability to maintain substantial funding levels demonstrates the Swiss public's enduring commitment to humanitarian causes. This sustained support enables Swiss Solidarity to maintain its crucial role in responding to both immediate crises and long-term humanitarian challenges, upholding Switzerland's reputation as a leader in international humanitarian assistance.
