Swiss Permafrost Study Reveals Climate Change Threats

Switzerland faces an unprecedented challenge as its mountain permafrost undergoes significant changes due to climate change. Recent studies reveal that 3-5% of Switzerland's territory contains permafrost, primarily at elevations above 2,600 metres. This frozen layer, crucial for mountain stability, is showing alarming signs of degradation that could have far-reaching consequences for both local communities and national infrastructure.

A groundbreaking international study led by Swiss scientist Jeannette Nötzli has revealed unprecedented warming trends in European mountain permafrost. The research, published in Nature, demonstrates that permafrost temperatures have risen by over 1°C at 10-meter depths in some locations over the past decade.
