Environmental Groups Challenge Alpine Solar Project

In a significant development for Switzerland's renewable energy sector, the Franz Weber Foundation (FFW) and Helvetia Nostra (HN) have formally launched an appeal against the controversial Gondosolar project in canton Valais. The environmental organizations filed their appeal with the Valais State Council, marking a crucial moment in the ongoing debate between renewable energy expansion and environmental preservation in the Swiss Alps.

The Gondosolar project represents an ambitious solar installation planned for the Alpine region. The proposal includes 2,200 double-sided solar modules, designed to be arranged vertically on cross-shaped structures. Covering approximately 17,000 square meters at an altitude exceeding 2,000 meters, the project would transform a currently undeveloped Alpine area into one of Switzerland's significant high-altitude solar installations.

Environmental groups have raised serious concerns about the project's impact on the alpine ecosystem. According to the appellants, the project's environmental impact assessments are inadequately documented, making it difficult for authorities and civil society to evaluate its true ecological consequences. The organizations particularly emphasize the lack of alternative site studies and the absence of compensatory environmental measures in the current proposal. The pristine nature of the site, currently free from any infrastructure, adds weight to their concerns about irreversible changes to the alpine landscape.

The appeal process now involves multiple regulatory bodies, with parallel procedures underway. While the main appeal has been lodged with the Valais State Council, a separate process is being conducted with the Swiss Federal Office of Energy regarding the electrical infrastructure approvals. The appellants have also requested a legal opinion as part of their appeal, highlighting procedural concerns about the Cantonal Building Commission's approval process. This multi-layered challenge could significantly impact the timeline and ultimate fate of the Gondosolar project.
