Major Gold Smuggling Ring Uncovered Between Italy and Switzerland

Swiss customs authorities have unveiled a sophisticated gold smuggling operation between Italy and Switzerland, resulting in approximately CHF25 million in diverted royalties from the Swiss government. The operation, which came to light following an extensive investigation, represents one of the most significant precious metal smuggling cases in recent Swiss history.

The Federal Office of Customs and Border Security spearheaded the investigation, working in close collaboration with authorities from Germany, Italy, and Liechtenstein. The investigation revealed a complex operation where gold was purchased in Italy, deliberately circumventing Italian regulations on precious metal trade and tax provisions. A 65-year-old Italian national has been identified as the alleged mastermind behind the operation.

Between 2016 and 2021, the smugglers employed sophisticated concealment techniques to transport gold across the border. The precious metal was ingeniously hidden within various vehicle components, including dashboards, fuel tanks, and car seats. This systematic operation managed to evade detection for several years before authorities uncovered the scheme.

The Swiss authorities have filed a comprehensive legal complaint with the Ticino cantonal criminal court. The charges against the Italian suspect include aggravated fraud, aggravated tax evasion (VAT), customs offenses, and violations of precious metal control laws. Prosecutors are seeking a three-year suspended sentence, a minimum fine of CHF500,000, and a ten-year entry ban to Switzerland. As per legal protocol, the presumption of innocence remains until final judgment.

The successful dismantling of this smuggling operation highlights the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation between Swiss, German, Italian, and Liechtenstein authorities. This collaborative effort demonstrates Switzerland's commitment to combating international financial crimes and maintaining the integrity of its precious metal trade regulations.
