"These are the numbers we dreamed of. Our expectations have been fulfilled"
"We felt that the city of Basel was really involved right from the start"
The 2025 Eurovision Song Contest in Basel has achieved unprecedented success with over half a million visitors attending various events throughout the competition week. The main venues, St. Jakobshalle and the Arena, welcomed 100,000 spectators for the official shows, while an impressive 343,000 people participated in public viewings and related events across the city. The television broadcast reached an estimated 170 million viewers worldwide, cementing Basel's position as a capable host of major international events.
The massive turnout has delivered a significant boost to Basel's local economy. According to Conradin Cramer, president of Basel's cantonal government, the event met all expectations, with hotels, restaurants, and local businesses benefiting from the influx of international visitors. The city's public transport system and cultural venues experienced unprecedented activity levels, while the extensive public viewing areas at the exhibition centre and Barfüsserplatz created additional economic opportunities for local vendors and service providers.
While the event was largely peaceful, organizers faced some security challenges. A protest involving 700-800 people occurred in the city center, resulting in three police officers being hospitalized after an altercation. The security forces efficiently managed the situation, conducting checks on approximately 400 people while maintaining the safety of the main event venues. Despite these isolated incidents, the overall security operation was considered successful in ensuring the safety of the hundreds of thousands of visitors.
The Eurovision Song Contest has left an indelible mark on Basel's cultural landscape. Swiss Broadcasting Corporation Director General Susanne Wille praised the city's enthusiastic involvement from the beginning. The event showcased Basel's capability to host major international cultural events, with Austrian singer JJ ultimately claiming victory in a contest that highlighted Switzerland's role as a cultural crossroads in Europe. The success of Eurovision 2025 has positioned Basel as a premier destination for future international cultural events.
