In a pioneering move that sets new standards for major event safety in Switzerland, Basel has unveiled a comprehensive anti-violence framework for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). The initiative, spearheaded by Basel's authorities, represents an unprecedented approach to ensuring visitor safety during large-scale cultural events. Basel president Conradin Cramer has emphasized that visitor safety and comfort are paramount priorities for the host city, positioning Basel as a trailblazer in event security measures.
The safety concept introduces a three-tiered support system designed to prevent and address incidents of sexual violence and discrimination. At its core, the initiative features a 24-hour multilingual hotline serving as the primary point of contact. Strategic safe spaces have been established at key locations including St Jakobshalle, Hall 5 of Messe Basel, and Barfüsserplatz. Mobile awareness teams will be deployed at identified critical areas, ready to respond to any situations requiring intervention. This comprehensive approach addresses various forms of misconduct, including sexual violence, queer hostility, racism, and anti-Semitism.
The implementation of this safety initiative involves extensive personnel training and coordination. Currently, 1,200 individuals have completed specialized training, including police officers, catering staff, and medical service providers. This number is projected to reach between 2,000 and 2,500 by the ESC's opening on May 10.
