Italy ranked first, while Switzerland came ahead of the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany when strikes were measured against land area.
The national figure conceals a summer of sharp peaks. August was the busiest month, with 7,993 strikes and 27 days of thunderstorms. On August 28 alone, the detection network registered 1,886 strikes across the country. June recorded 6,741 strikes and July 7,424.
Meteorage counted 893,458 cloud to ground strikes across Europe during the same period. Switzerland’s absolute total remained far below the totals of larger countries such as Italy, France and Spain. Its ranking changed when the figures were adjusted for territory, a useful measure for a compact country where storms can affect populated valleys, transport routes and mountain recreation areas within a short distance.
The season also brought destructive episodes elsewhere in Europe, including supercells, hail, damaging gusts and isolated tornadoes. Switzerland’s summer was not among its most lightning prone in recent years, Meteorage said, but several storms were unusually intense.
How the Alps Prime the Sky for Lightning
Switzerland’s geography gives thunderstorms several ways to strengthen. Warm, humid air can move north from the Mediterranean and meet cooler air arriving from the Atlantic or continental Europe. When that unstable air reaches the Alps, the mountain range forces it upward. Rising air cools, water vapour condenses and tall storm clouds can develop rapidly.
The terrain also creates local circulation. During sunny summer days, slopes heat at different rates and drive air upslope. Valleys can channel winds and concentrate rising air, while neighbouring ridges trigger storms at different times. These effects help explain why lightning activity can vary sharply between nearby districts, even when a national forecast describes the same broad weather pattern.
Switzerland’s position between major European weather regimes adds another ingredient. Moisture from the south can feed storms over Ticino and the central Alps, while fronts crossing western or northern Europe can generate activity in the Jura, Bernese Oberland and Alpine foothills. Storm cells may then intensify as they encounter steep terrain.
Topography does not guarantee a strike in every valley. The precise outcome depends on humidity, atmospheric instability, wind direction and the movement of individual cells. The result, however, is a country where several thunderstorm pathways intersect across a relatively small area.
Bern Leads, Lugano Packs the Highest Local Punch
Canton Bern led Switzerland with 3,426 strikes during the summer. Graubünden followed with 2,773, Ticino with 2,552, Valais with 2,276 and Vaud with 2,188. The distribution reflects the country’s exposure to several storm corridors and the large areas covered by Alpine and foothill terrain.
At district level, Lugano recorded 570 strikes and the highest particularly notable density in the national breakdown. Ticino often receives storms arriving from the south, where warm, moisture laden air from the Mediterranean can support vigorous convection. The canton’s lakes and valleys can also influence local wind patterns and storm development.
The Alpine cantons face a different mix of risks. Storms can form or intensify near ridges and high pastures, where hikers, climbers, livestock and workers have limited shelter. In July, lightning killed 97 black nosed sheep on an alp in Valais, an incident that underscored the danger for animals and people in exposed mountain terrain.
Switzerland also has its own recurring lightning hotspots. Gonten in Appenzell Innerrhoden was named the country’s lightning capital after recording the highest strike density per square kilometre in 2024. A local record does not predict every storm, but it illustrates how strongly small scale geography shapes the national picture.
Move Early When Thunder Reaches the Valley
A thunderstorm warning should change outdoor plans immediately, especially in the mountains. Hikers and visitors should check the forecast before setting out, monitor updates during the day and identify huts, buildings or transport stations that can provide shelter. Storms can build quickly after a hot morning, and visual signs such as darkening clouds, gusty winds or nearby thunder deserve an early response.
When thunder is audible, people should leave exposed ridges, summits, open fields, lakeshores and isolated viewpoints. A substantial enclosed building or a fully enclosed vehicle offers the safest refuge. A cable car station, mountain hut or house is preferable to a shallow overhang. People should avoid touching metal structures, fences and wet surfaces, and should spread out rather than sheltering in a tight group.
Those caught away from shelter should descend from high ground and keep distance from isolated trees, poles and other tall objects. The safest available position is low and separated from other people, while avoiding streams and areas that may flood during heavy rain. Swimming, boating and open water activities should stop at the first sign of a storm.
After the last thunder, wait before resuming exposed activities. Storm cells can move unpredictably, and a clear patch of sky does not always mean the danger has passed.
Prepare for Short, Violent Storm Windows
The 2026 figures point to concentrated episodes rather than a record season overall. Joris Royet, head of weather projects at Meteorage, said the summer was not among Switzerland’s most lightning prone in recent years. He described the defining feature as the intensity of certain storms, part of a broader European pattern that was significantly more active than summer 2025.
That distinction matters for public safety. A moderate seasonal total can still include short periods of dangerous hail, violent gusts, flash flooding and frequent cloud to ground strikes. Residents should treat warnings as local and time sensitive, since a storm crossing one canton may leave another with only rain or no major activity.
Climate conditions will remain important to monitor. A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, but lightning outcomes depend on several interacting factors, including instability, wind shear, frontal boundaries and storm organisation.
