Switzerland Signs Historic Trade Agreement with Thailand at WEF

In a landmark development at the World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos, Switzerland, as a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), has signed a comprehensive free trade agreement with Thailand. The signing ceremony, which took place on the sidelines of the prestigious forum, marks a significant milestone in Swiss-Thai economic relations and represents Thailand's first free trade agreement with a European nation.

The comprehensive agreement, resulting from ten rounds of negotiations across Bangkok, Geneva, and Oslo since June 2022, encompasses multiple facets of economic cooperation. The deal covers trade in goods and services, investment protocols, intellectual property protection, and competition rules. As Switzerland's 37th free trade agreement, it demonstrates the country's commitment to expanding its global trade network and strengthening its position in Southeast Asia.

The agreement builds upon a robust trading relationship, with merchandise trade between EFTA states and Thailand reaching €3.2 billion (CHF3 billion) in 2023. This new framework is expected to facilitate enhanced market access for Swiss companies in Thailand's strategic market, which offers significant economic potential. The agreement particularly benefits key Swiss export sectors while opening new opportunities for bilateral investment and economic cooperation.

The agreement carries substantial diplomatic weight as Thailand's first free trade deal with a European country. Swiss Economics Minister Guy Parmelin hailed it as a major success for Swiss foreign economic policy, while Thai Deputy Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan emphasized its historic nature.
