Swiss Tech Industry Faces Double Challenge
Switzerland's technology sector grapples with declining sales and potential US tariffs, marking eight consecutive quarters of downturn and raising concerns about future competitiveness.

Industry Decline Overview
Switzerland's technology sector is facing unprecedented challenges as it marks its eighth consecutive quarter of decline. The first quarter of 2025 has been particularly challenging, with industry sales dropping by 3% compared to the same period last year. The sector's capacity utilization has fallen to 81.1%, significantly below the long-term average of 86%, indicating substantial operational inefficiencies and reduced production levels.
US Tariff Impact
The threat of new US tariffs has cast a shadow over the Swiss technology sector. The Trump administration's announcement of potential additional tariffs, initially set at 31% but temporarily scaled back to 10% for 90 days, has created significant uncertainty. This development poses a serious threat to Swiss-US trade relations, particularly concerning given that US exports had shown a 5.3% increase before this announcement.
Export Performance
Despite the overall challenging environment, Swiss tech exports managed a modest 0.7% increase, reaching CHF17 billion. The performance varied significantly across regions and sectors. While exports to the EU grew by 0.8% and US shipments rose by 5.3%, Asian markets saw a sharp decline of 6.6%. Precision instruments and electrotechnical equipment showed resilience with growth of 4.5% and 1.4% respectively, while machinery and metals sectors contracted.
Future Outlook
The outlook for Switzerland's technology sector remains uncertain. Industry leaders, including Swissmem Director Stefan Brupbacher, have expressed concern about the disappointing results and potential future impacts. The sector is calling for swift government action, particularly in accelerating free trade agreements with Mercosur countries to diversify market opportunities. The combination of existing decline and potential US tariffs could significantly impact the sector's recovery prospects.
