In an unprecedented move, the Swiss cantons of Basel-City and Basel-Land have implemented emergency water restrictions following the first sightings of Japanese beetles this year. The authorities have announced a comprehensive ban on lawn watering that will remain in effect until the end of September 2025. This measure specifically targets green areas that could attract these invasive pests, while still allowing residents to water their flower beds and vegetable gardens.

The Japanese beetles have been detected in several key locations across the Basel region. Primary sightings occurred in the Brüglinger Ebene in Münchenstein, following patterns similar to last year's infestation. Additional beetles have been discovered in Basel's Rosenfeldpark and the Wenkenpark in Riehen. The center of infestation encompasses areas in Basel, Muttenz, Riehen, Münchenstein, and Birsfelden, creating a significant zone requiring careful monitoring and control measures.

Beyond water restrictions, authorities have implemented a comprehensive containment strategy. A strict ban on transporting green waste and soil from infested areas has been established. However, sports facilities have received special consideration, with operators able to request exemptions from the cantonal plant protection service. These facilities are permitted to use nematodes for Japanese beetle control. Regular municipal green waste collection continues unaffected, though residents are urged to report any suspected beetle sightings to authorities immediately.
