The sophisticated sensor suites and computing power required for Level 3 automation are currently exclusive to top-tier luxury models, with prices soaring above CHF 150,000. For the average Swiss commuter, this revolution is visible only through the window of a passing limousine.
Astra spokesman Jérôme Jacky acknowledges that semi-automated systems are merely a transition, currently reserved for the wealthy few. This economic disparity means that the promised benefits of increased motorway capacity and smoother traffic flow will be marginal at best in the short term. Until these systems trickle down to mass-market vehicles, the impact on Swiss traffic congestion will remain negligible.
