Historic Arth-Rigi Railway celebrates 150th anniversary

The Arth-Rigi Railway (ARB) stands as a testament to Swiss engineering excellence and pioneering spirit in mountain railway development. Inaugurated on June 4, 1875, it earned the distinction of being the first railway line to operate entirely within the canton of Schwyz. The railway's early history is intertwined with significant developments in Swiss transportation infrastructure, including the strategic relocation of its headquarters from Oberarth to Goldau in 1880, following the Gotthard Railway's revised planning decisions. This move led to the creation of the dual-named Arth-Goldau station, which remains a significant transport hub to this day.

In 1907, the Arth-Rigi Railway achieved a groundbreaking technological milestone by becoming the world's first electrically operated standard-gauge cogwheel railway. This innovation set a new standard for mountain railway systems globally. The railway continued its tradition of technical advancement, and by 1949, its commuter trains were recognized as the most modern of their era. The engineering achievements of ARB have influenced mountain railway development worldwide, showcasing Swiss expertise in railway technology and alpine transportation solutions.

The Arth-Rigi Railway has played a crucial role in developing Swiss alpine tourism. Since its inception, it has provided access to the 1,798-meter summit, attracting visitors from around the world, including notable figures such as Queen Victoria in 1868. The railway, in combination with boat services on Lake Zug, created a popular travel experience that continues to attract tourists. Recently, a new connection from Zug to Arth was established, coordinating with bus services and ARB to enhance accessibility for modern travelers. This integration of different transport modes exemplifies the Swiss approach to comprehensive tourism infrastructure.

The 150th anniversary celebrations of the Arth-Rigi Railway commenced on June 5, 2025, featuring an array of special events and activities. The festivities included free rides, concerts, and a market, highlighting the railway's historical significance. A particular highlight was the parade of historic vehicles, with a vintage fleet operating between Rigi Staffel and Rigi Kulm. While inclement weather prevented the planned flypast of historic aircraft, this event has been rescheduled for August 1, 2025, as part of the 'Rigi Historic XXL Days' celebration, demonstrating the ongoing commitment to commemorating this significant piece of Swiss railway heritage.
