Swiss Federal Railways announces transition to exclusively renewable electricity sources from January 2025, primarily utilizing hydropower as part of sustainability strategy.

"The switch to 100% renewable traction current is part of company's sustainability strategy"
In a landmark announcement, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has committed to powering its entire rail network with 100% renewable electricity starting January 1, 2025. This significant shift in energy sourcing represents a major step forward in Switzerland's commitment to sustainable transportation and climate action. The transition will primarily rely on hydropower, with additional renewable sources being procured from both domestic and European markets.
Currently, Swiss Railways operates on an energy mix comprising 90% hydropower and 10% nuclear power. The transition plan involves completely phasing out nuclear power usage, with the company planning to sell its nuclear power allocations on the electricity market. To ensure transparency and accountability, all renewable power sources will be certified with guarantees of origin from 2025 onwards. This transition demonstrates Switzerland's commitment to clean energy while maintaining its renowned efficient rail service.
Swiss Railways already boasts impressive environmental credentials, contributing only 0.3% of Switzerland's transportation-related CO2 emissions. The railway system demonstrates remarkable efficiency, handling 17% of passenger traffic and 38% of freight traffic while consuming just 5% of the country's total land transportation energy. This efficiency, combined with the shift to 100% renewable energy, reinforces rail as the most environmentally friendly motorized transport option alongside non-motorized traffic.
The renewable energy transition is part of Swiss Railways' broader sustainability strategy, aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement. The company has set ambitious targets, including halving operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving a 90% reduction by 2040. Beyond energy sourcing, the strategy encompasses other environmental initiatives, such as implementing climate-friendly alternatives to technical gases and using more environmentally friendly refrigerants in train air conditioning systems. These comprehensive efforts demonstrate Swiss Railways' commitment to maintaining its position as a leader in sustainable transportation.
