Swiss Hospitals Launch National Cybersecurity Center

In a landmark move to strengthen cybersecurity in the healthcare sector, eighteen Swiss healthcare organizations have joined forces to establish the Healthcare Cyber Security Centre (H-CSC). This unprecedented initiative, launched in Thurgau, represents Switzerland's first coordinated national defense system against cyber threats in the healthcare sector. The establishment comes at a crucial time when healthcare institutions worldwide face increasing sophisticated cyber attacks targeting sensitive patient data and critical medical systems.

The initiative brings together prominent healthcare institutions across Switzerland, including the cantonal hospital authorities of Ticino and Graubünden. Notable founding members include the university hospitals of Basel, Bern, and Zurich. The Gruppo ospedaliero Moncucco, comprising the Moncucco clinics in Lugano and Santa Chiara in Locarno, has also joined the initiative. While French-speaking institutions are currently underrepresented, with only Fribourg and Valais hospitals participating from that region, the center plans to expand its membership starting September 1, 2025.

The H-CSC's primary mission is to serve as an early warning system against cyber attacks and provide tailor-made security services for hospitals. As stated by the center, 'hospitals are tempting targets for cybercriminals, since they handle large quantities of sensitive data.' The platform will facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration between hospitals, focusing on preventing, detecting, and containing cyber incidents. This is particularly crucial as cyber attacks can severely impact hospital operations, potentially leading to postponed surgeries, compromised patient data, and disabled medical devices.

Starting September 1, 2025, the H-CSC will open its membership to all hospitals with a public service mandate, signaling a significant expansion phase. This growth strategy aligns with recommendations from the Federal Office for Cyber Security and demonstrates Switzerland's commitment to creating a robust, nationwide cybersecurity framework for healthcare institutions. The center aims to create synergies that will sustainably strengthen the healthcare sector's cybersecurity capabilities, setting a potential model for other countries to follow.
