"The aim of the test is to gain insights into the personnel and material resources required to strengthen the army's defence capabilities"
The Swiss Air Force has launched a significant enhancement to its air defense capabilities by doubling its F/A-18 fighter jet patrols in a comprehensive two-week test program. This strategic move, announced by the Swiss Defense Ministry, marks a substantial upgrade to Switzerland's airspace protection measures. The initiative will see the number of permanently available fighter jet patrols increase from one to two, significantly boosting the nation's rapid response capabilities.
Operating from the Payerne military airfield in canton Vaud, Air Base Command 11 will oversee this enhanced deployment from May 3 to May 17, 2025. The new configuration maintains four F/A-18 fighter jets in a state of high readiness, capable of taking off within 15 minutes of notification. This doubles the previous capability, allowing for both independent patrol operations and coordinated double patrol missions. The flexibility of this new arrangement significantly enhances the Air Force's ability to respond to multiple simultaneous situations.
This enhancement of Switzerland's air defense capabilities comes amid evolving security challenges in the European context. The Defense Ministry emphasizes that this test period will provide crucial insights into the personnel and material resources required for sustained enhanced operations. The initiative reflects Switzerland's commitment to maintaining robust national defense while adapting to changing security dynamics in the region.
Since 2021, the Swiss Air Force has maintained a continuous air policing presence, with armed fighter aircraft on standby 24/7. These patrols serve dual purposes: responding to 'hot missions' involving airspace violations or emergencies, and conducting 'live missions' to verify foreign state aircraft with diplomatic clearances. This established system forms the foundation upon which the enhanced patrol capability is being tested, representing Switzerland's commitment to robust airspace security.
