Italy Uncovers Major Gold Smuggling Operation into Switzerland

Italian authorities have successfully dismantled a sophisticated precious metals smuggling operation that channeled approximately 600 kilograms of gold and silver into Switzerland. The operation, valued at €26 million, marks one of the largest precious metals smuggling cases uncovered in recent years between the two countries. The scheme highlights ongoing challenges in monitoring cross-border precious metal movements and the persistent attraction of Switzerland's gold market for illegal operators.

The Guardia di Finanza's two-year investigation revealed an intricate operation centered around a businessman from Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna. Investigators discovered jewelry worth over €220,000 concealed in a buried vat in one suspect's garden. Additionally, €100,000 in cash, derived from illegal precious metal sales, was intercepted at a Swiss border crossing. The investigation suggests the precious metals were sourced illegally in Italy before being transported to Switzerland for processing.

Seventeen individuals are now facing trial on charges including transnational criminal conspiracy, illegal trade in used precious metals, and money laundering. The main defendant, a Ferrara businessman, is alleged to have orchestrated the operation. Eight additional suspects have accepted plea bargains, agreeing to pay compensation that will be donated to charitable causes. The case represents a significant success for Italian law enforcement in combating organized precious metal trafficking.
